Education Standards vs. Curriculum: What's the Difference?

Have you ever planned a road trip? You know where you want to end up, but there are multiple ways to get there. In education, terms like standards and curriculum often get used interchangeably, but they are not the same thing. One simple way to think about them is through a travel metaphor: standards are the destination, and curriculum is the journey taken to get there.

Standards: the destination

Imagine you are planning a trip to the Grand Canyon. The destination is clear, you know where you will arrive. That is what standards like the Common Core State Standards, or other state-specific standards, do for education. They outline what students should know and be able to do by the end of a grade level or course. Think of them like a map pin dropped on the horizon. Standards do not tell you how to get to that goal, but they give educators a shared target to aim for as they plan instruction.

Curriculum: the journey

Now think about the actual trip, the roads you take, the sights you see, the stops you choose. That is the curriculum. The curriculum is the collection of resources, lessons, activities, and materials teachers use to guide students toward meeting the standards. Different schools or districts may choose different curricula based on their values and the needs of the students they serve.

Curriculum:

  • Outlines the path to reach the standards
  • Includes lesson plans, activities, and resources
  • Can be tailored to student interests and community context

Why the distinction matters

Confusion often arises when people expect standards to provide the "how." Standards do not dictate teaching methods, pacing, or specific materials; they simply state what students need to achieve. Curriculum is where teachers and schools have room to make choices, respond to students' interests, leverage local resources, or use creative approaches to make learning meaningful.

Both are essential:

  • Without standards, learning can lose direction.
  • Without a strong curriculum, learning can feel disjointed and uninspired.

An important reminder

A curriculum resource may not always go into the depth required to fully meet a standard. Standards are often long, detailed, and open to interpretation, so curriculum materials do not always line up perfectly. There may also be a mismatch in the Depth of Knowledge (DOK) required by a standard compared with the activities in a curriculum resource. Simply mentioning a concept related to a standard does not guarantee true alignment. Achieving full alignment requires careful understanding of the standards themselves, including the rigor and Depth of Knowledge required for mastery, so there are no gaps that could affect future success.
